The next hexay after her nectar collection duties, Beegan flew to the termite barracks and sought Bigmite. She pretended she was an apprentice in a new program that trained bees to work as messengers to help the flies. Beebie even sewed her a banner like the flies wore to show they were official messengers. The plot worked because soldiers always responded well to stripes or badges, making them seem official. Beegan wasted no time and gave Bigmite the message about Antuna.

Bigmite stared long at Beegan and remarked, “I told Dinomite I would do anything for him, not his fuzzy-headed friends.” Does she take me for a fool?

Beegan puffed herself up and sprinkled a sharp scent. “Well, how do you think Dinomite will take it when Antuna dies before he can see her again because you wouldn’t relay my message?”

Bigmite grumbled in response. “Well, when you put it like that, I can try to find a way.” But I still hate bees.

“You had better, or I’m sure Dinomite will have you by the throat again,” said Beegan.

“Yes, ma’am,” shrugged Bigmite. “But this is the only time I’ll do anything for a lousy bee.”

Although Bigmite recoiled at the mention of Dinomite, he was still a formidable termite. Embarrassed by the rumors about him losing a fight to Dinomite, he became extra nasty with many other soldiers he encountered, even the officers. So, when any soldier told him they couldn’t get his message through to Dinomite because of the sensitive nature of the mission, he reminded them how much bigger he was than them. Then, when he realized that the soldiers at the next station hampered him, he found out who caused the roadblock and visited them. He went right to the secret training grounds, where he met with Dinomite’s captain.

“So, private, I hear you are a very persuasive soldier,” jeered Captain Slimite as Bigmite approached.

“Yes sir, captain sir, I have my ways,” boasted Bigmite. And I’ll coax you too.

Slimite gave him a mocking glare. “You lost your way coming here, and what makes you think private Dinomite is even here?”

“I was told...” started Bigmite. His confidence shook. This task may not be so easy, I think.

“That’s sir, I was told, private. Do you think I care what you were told?” derided Slimite. “I could have you court-mangled for the act you pulled. Sit down!” An acrid aroma inundated the area.

“But I...”

Slimite stood up and stared down at Bigmite, who was now seated. “That’s But, sir, private. Do you even have any training?” Slimite mocked further, “I know you like to throw your weight around, but nobody intimidates me, soldier.”

Bigmite squirmed under pressure. “But sir, Dino’s friend is...”

“Private, I don’t care about Dinomite’s friend. And I already heard the story,” barked Slimite.

Bigmite shriveled in his chair, realizing that his size would not influence this officer. He cast him a frown. How can I crack this nut?

Slimite smirked, “Private, I don’t want you to think I’m doing you any favors.”

“Sir?” Bigmite raised his eyebrows. So, I get to you after all?

“Dinomite is a good soldier, twice the soldier you are.
